A career in lighting is one thing, but who is Gareth Frankland outside of work? In this conversation, he shares his personal interests, passions, and what keeps him motivated.

A Love for Adventure

Gareth’s hobbies reflect his energetic approach to life. “I love cycling, skiing, and pretty much anything that involves going downhill fast,” he laughs. “I only started skiing four years ago, but it’s become a real passion.”

With two kids growing up quickly, much of his free time is spent with them. “Football, cricket, cycling—we do it all,” he says. “It’s great to see them getting into sports and having fun.”

Travel and Business Mindset

Travel has been a big part of Gareth’s life, both professionally and personally. “I travel a lot for work, but it’s not as glamorous as people think. You see a lot of hotel rooms and airports,” he says. But when it comes to personal travel, Santorini is his go-to place. “There’s an energy to it—maybe because it’s on the side of a volcano—but it’s the one place where I really relax.”

Gareth has always been drawn to business. “Even as a kid, I was buying and selling things at school,” he recalls. “I love the challenge of understanding a market and finding ways to do things differently. That’s what makes Filix exciting—we’re not just following the industry, we’re shaping it.”

For those entering the lighting industry, Gareth’s advice is simple: “Be curious. Lighting is an amazing field with so much creativity and innovation. The more you explore, the better you’ll be.”
